He was raised in southern California and was a student at Huntington Beach High School, which was where he excelled as a player on both the football and basketball teams. Gonzalez excelled in these games at the University of California. He led the football team to the 1996 Aloha Bowl. Here, Gonzalez tied the school record for bowl games with nine receptions. Gonzalez led the basketball team into the Sweet 16 of NCAA basketball tournament within a couple of months. Gonzalez was selected to the NFL Draft in 1997. The Kansas City Chiefs selected Gonzalez as the 13th overall pick. Gonzalez played for the Chiefs from 1997 until the year 2008. The Chiefs dealt Gonzalez to the Atlanta Falcons. In his second season in the NFL and never catching less than 59 of them in the course of a season.
